Help on Database Connections page

Use this page to specify the Discoverer connections (i.e. the sets of database login details) used to determine the worksheets/list of worksheets accessible by the portlet. The connection you select also controls the data that is displayed in a Discoverer Worksheet or Gauges portlet.

For example, you might want only authenticated users (i.e. users that have already logged in to OracleAS Portal) to be able to see data in a portlet. In this case, public users (i.e. users that have not logged in to OracleAS Portal) would see an empty portlet.

Alternatively, for security reasons you might want to enable authenticated users to connect using a different connection, or use their Single Sign-On details to determine the data that they see (e.g. if a VPD policy is enforced) .

Note: As a prerequisite to creating a Discoverer portlet, you need access to a Discoverer public connection or private connection containing database login details that provide access the data/list of worksheets in the portlet. The OracleAS middle-tier manager creates public connections using Oracle Application Server Control.

Publisher

Use these fields to select the Discoverer connection that provides access to the data/list of worksheets that you want to display in the portlet.

Field Description
Publisher's Connection

Use this drop down list to select the Discoverer connection that provides access to the worksheets that you want to display in the portlet. For example, if a workbook called Sales is stored in the Sales_DB database, choose a connection that contains database login details for Sales_DB. The Description field below shows additional information about the selected connection.

Public connections are indicated with a trailing asterisk (*).

View Detail of All Connections Use this link to display the Connection Details page, which displays extra connection details that you cannot see in the Publisher's Connection drop down list. For example, you can see the database username, database name, and EUL for all connections available to the current Single Sign-on ID.

Users Logged In

Use these fields to select the Discoverer connection to use for Oracle Portal users that have already been authenticated using a Single Sign-on ID.

Field Description

Display same data/list of worksheets to all users using connection

Use this check box to display the same data/list of worksheets to all authenticated users. The data/list of worksheets displayed will be the data/list of worksheets accessible to the database user ID in the specified connection. Use the adjacent drop down list to select the connection to use.

If you are creating a Discoverer Worksheet or Gauges portlet, you typically use this option when you are not using a Virtual Private Database security policy to restrict access to data.

Hint: If you select the Publisher's Connection option in the adjacent drop down list, authenticated users will connect as the user specified in the Publisher's Connection field in the Publisher Area. If you want to restrict authenticated users to a different connection, choose a different connection from this drop down list. For example, you might have created a public connection with limited access to sensitive data for use by authenticated users.

Display different data/list of worksheets using Publisher's connection

Use this check box to use Single Sign-on IDs to determine the data/list of worksheets that users see in a Discoverer portlet.

If you are creating a Discoverer Worksheet or Gauges portlet, select this check box if you are using a Virtual Private Database that uses Single Sign-on IDs to determine the data that users can access.

Display different data by allowing users to customize database connection

Use this radio button when you want to enable authenticated users to go to the Customize page and change the connection. The ability to change the connection enables end users to use the portlet to access data in other databases, or connect using different login details.

Note: This field is only displayed for Discoverer Worksheet and Discoverer Gauges portlets.

Show default data/list of worksheets using connection Use this check box to display data/list of worksheets accessible to the database user ID before the end user customizes the portlet and possibly changes the connection details. The default data displayed is the data accessible to the database user ID in the specified connection.

Users Not Logged In

Use these fields to select the Discoverer connection for public users (i.e. Oracle Portal users who have not been authenticated using a Single Sign-on ID).

Field Description
Do not display data/list of worksheets Use this radio button to always display a blank portlet to public users.
Display data/list of worksheets using

Use this drop down list to select the connection to use for public users when they access the Discoverer portlet.

Hint: If you select the Publisher's Connection option, public users will see data/worksheets available to the user specified in the Publisher's Connection list in the Publisher Area. If you want to restrict public users to a different connection, choose a different connection from this drop down list. For example, you might have created a public connection with limited access to sensitive data for use by public users.
